A Sign of Relief for Mesothelioma Patients
Fri, 07/25/2008 - 20:16A sigh of relief can be breathed now that a new bill has been passed through Congress. This bill called The Child Maintenance and Other Payments Bill will provide those that have been diagnosed with mesothelioma to get a lump sum of cash. For so long, no one was giving money to those that had been diagnosed with this illness and for so long, your only hope was to hire a Mesothelioma Attorney. This will probably still be the case, but with this bill passing, it will ensure that people get money to get the treatment they need (or to hire that lawyer).
Unfortunately, people are skeptical because they are unsure just how much money is going to be received. Will it be a small amount of will they get a very nice chunk of change? In the past, small amounts of money have been sent, but it's never been enough which is why attorneys have been called. This might really be a good sign for those that have mesothelioma. We'll have to wait and see, though, just what they get.

Sun City Offers Money to Senior Center
Fri, 07/25/2008 - 16:08It seems that in some places, there are communities that actually do care about their seniors. In Sun City, Arizona, the county officials have allocated $20,000 to be given to the Sun Health-Olive Branch Senior Center for hot meals, health, and other programs that they might not otherwise get. This money is a great sigh of relief to those that are looking out for these seniors because they are normally very underfunded.
Unfortunately, this sign of help to the senior center is not normal around the nation like one would hope and expect. Instead, senior citizens have to rely on their senior life insurance to hopefully pay for it. And, if they can't afford it, their children or grand children are stuck paying thousands of dollars to cover the costs. This funding by the Sun City officials definitely means that for a little while, seniors will get the health care they need to survive. A simple blood pressure test can mean the world for a senior who has high blood pressure.
If other counties around the nation follow the same funding plan as this county did, numerous other senior centers will have the funding that they need to ensure that the seniors get what they need.

The Quest for Longevity
Fri, 07/18/2008 - 01:06At the present, there are various forms of stresses that the human body is subjected to, whether it be in the form of pollutants, toxins, as well as diseases. As people age, their bodies are not as resistant to these stresses. It can even be observed that the average life expectancy for both men and women today is significantly shorter than it was 20 years ago. Along with the aging process come changes in the normal mental performance and memory ability. For this reason, science continues to develop methods and provide newer info on how seniors of today can extend their lives and maintain their peak mental performance.
One of the best things to do to stay young and live longer is to exercise regularly. For seniors, any form of activity is beneficial, especially for keeping healthy circulation and maintaining the integrity of bones and muscles. In 2003, a New York study further stated that exercise can actually help boost your memory and mental performance. More solutions on aging and longevity can be explored at PATH medical.
Aside from these mentioned activities, one must get rid of bad habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol. Lastly, the body must be provided with the right diet as a source of energy, for regulation of the body systems, as well as for added resilience to diseases and injury. More info on nutrition can be found at Total Health Nutrients.

What is Geriatrics
Sun, 07/06/2008 - 21:04Geriatrics is best described as the the branch of medicine that focuses on health of elderly patients. It's focus is to prevent and treat disease and disability, as well as promote general health of seniors. There is no specific age at which a patient is prescribed geriatric treatments, as this is generally determined by the patients profile, and the symptoms that the patient suffers from. Some of the most common treatments are for immobility, incontinence and degradation of memory. Geriatrics may also include elderly care for delirium, impaired vision or hearing, and many other discomforts and diseases that older patients can suffer from.
In the United States, primary care providers that are board certified in either family practice or internal medicine and also have completed the training required to receive a Certificate of Added Qualifications in geriatric medicine are known as geriatricians. However, in the United Kingdom, geriatricians are usually just hospital physicians. Occasionally, some concentrate solely on community geriatrics.
Some of the more specialized geriatrics services include orthogeriatrics, which is a combination of orthopedic surgery and osteoporosis, and psychogeriatrics, which focuses on dementia, depression and other conditions common in the elderly.

Current Trends in Geriatrics
Sun, 07/06/2008 - 20:15One of the most important trends in geriatrics today is the continuing efforts to treat and prevent delirium in hospitalized elderly patients. Symptoms of this condition surface when the hospitalized elderly patient becomes disoriented and confused while hospitalized. The result is a degradation of health, and it can also lead to prolonged hospitalization and other health complications. Treatment of this disorder includes mental stimulation and keeping the patient oriented in reality.
One of the leading programs in preventing delirium and improving the quality of care provided to elderly patients is the Hospital Elder Life Program, or HELP. Another program who's goals include preventing delirium include the Elder Horizons Program (EHP). Also, the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) established minimum competencies in 2007 for graduating medical students to ensure competent care for elderly patients. The twenty six competencies in eight different domains along with full descriptions of each can be found on the Portal of Geriatric Online Education.
