Exactly what is a Trave Nurse? Well, a Travel Nurse is a licensed nurse who takes short term positions around the country, usually to fill in for nurses who have left for whatever reason and a replacement has not yet been found. The travel nurse can be of great benefit to the geriatric patient who is need of temporary help for whatever reason. Travel Nurses are typically of the highest caliber and normally have more than enough experience to care for the elderly patient.
Travel Nurses come in all different varieties. A Geriatric Nurse is a registered nurse who specializes in Gerontology. The Traveling Geriatric Nurse provides all forms healthcare for elderly patients. As a high proportion of the population is becoming older, traveling nursing is becoming increasingly more important to an ever increasing numbers of patients. They provide healthcare to residents in long care living facilities, educate, support and build relationships with the families, and generally promote good health.
A Traveling Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) holds a Master’s Degree or higher from a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner program. Along with theory and an examination, there is also a minimum number of supervised clinical hours (usually 500) that must be included in the program. The Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education (CCNE) and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) provide the accreditation for these courses.
